Troubles at L.A.’s Modern-Art Museum Have Deep and Tangled Roots

February 7, 2013, 10:06 am

An article in the March issue of Vanity Fair  examines the continuing divisions and operational struggles at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, widely known as MOCA.

The magazine details the roots of the current disputes over the museum’s path under its director, former art dealer Jeffrey Deitch; the role in its management of billionaire patron Eli Broad; and the firestorm last year over the ouster of longtime chief curator Paul Schimmel, which led several board members to defect.

The article also looks at past tensions between Mr. Broad and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the state of talks between MOCA and the University of Southern California about a possible partnership.
