U.N. Says Somali Famine Over but Warns Crisis Could Return

February 6, 2012, 10:39 am

The United Nations said Friday that an exceptionally strong harvest and efforts by relief groups have put an end to famine conditions in Somalia for now, but crisis conditions could return within a few months, according to Reuters.

Good rains, which produced a harvest double the average size of the past 17 years, and food deliveries to 180,000 people who fled to camps in the capital city of Mogadishu from hard-hit southern and central Somalia have eased conditions.

But Mark Bowden, the top U.N. humanitarian official in the East African country, said millions of Somalis are still short of food and clean water and “the situation is expected to deteriorate in May.”

Al Shabab, the al Qaeda-linked Islamist group that controls much of the country, last week expelled the International Committee of the Red Cross, one of the few aid groups that was still operating in rebel-held areas. Mr. Bowden called the expulsion a “critical concern.”
