The University of Virginia’s Board of Visitors voted unanimously Tuesday to restore Teresa A. Sullivan as president, reversing a decision that roiled the campus for two weeks and became a national flashpoint in debates about the course of U.S. colleges, The Chronicle of Higher Education and The Washington Post report.

The public vote came after a private meeting between Ms. Sullivan and Helen Dragas, the university rector (equivalent to board chair). Ms. Dragas engineered the president’s forced resignation on June 10, arguing that the school needed to respond more quickly to needed changes at the university rather than following Ms. Sullivan’s self-described “incrementalist” approach.

“I believe real progress is more possible than ever now,” Ms. Dragas said in the board meeting. “It is unfortunate that we had to have a near-death experience to get there, but the university should not waste the enormous opportunity at hand.”

Ms. Sullivan’s forced resignation created an uproar that led to protests by students, faculty, and alumni and threats by some donors to withdraw gifts.
