U.K. Judge Allows Catholic Adoption Group to Bar Gay Parents

March 19, 2010, 7:00 am

A British judge has granted a Catholic adoption charity’s request for an exemption from national regulations barring discrimination based on sexual orientation, reports the Guardian.

The ruling Wednesday allows Catholic Care, which serves three dioceses, to maintain its policy of refusing to consider same-sex couples for adoptions.

The organization was the last of Britain’s Catholic adoption agencies to maintain a challenge to a decision by the country’s Charity Commission that such groups must comply with the gay-rights measure. Other church-linked charities have dropped adoption services or broken formal religious ties to comply with the regulations.
