A Pennsylvania woman was sentenced Tuesday to three months in prison for placing students from abroad in squalid homes when she served as a coordinator for a national foreign-exchange charity, The Scranton Times Tribune writes.
Edna Burgette, 70, of Scranton, pleaded guilty in February to child endangerment. She admitted lying about host families in documents when arranging five student placements for the Aspect Foundation, in San Francisco. She collected about $2,900 in fees for the work. She faces sentencing later this month on federal charges stemming from the case.
The students told investigators they were placed in filthy homes, including one headed by an ex-convict, and were underfed. The foundation fired Ms. Burgette after the allegations came to light.
