The Allegheny, Pa., County Council voted unanimously Tuesday to abandon a previously approved proposal to charge major local nonprofit organizations a fee in lieu of property taxes, reports the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
The council, which had unanimously passed the plan on November 4, voted not to override County Executive Dan Onorato’s veto after hearing from the county lawyer that the measure is essentially a tax on tax-exempt groups and thus violates state law.
Some council members said they intend to continue searching for a way to collect payments from nonprofit agencies for police and other government services.
