Volunteerism Law Gets Off to Slow Start

April 23, 2010, 7:00 am

A year after President Obama signed the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, little of the money set aside to create volunteer opportunities nationwide has been distributed, says National Public Radio.

The measure seeks to triple the size of the AmeriCorps national service effort. It has resulted so far in $2-million in grants, handed out through the new Summer of Service program. And $50-million set aside to finance nonprofit groups with innovative ideas for solving social problems won’t be distributed until June.

Patrick Corvington, the new head of the Corporation for National and Community Service, says it takes time for the agency to ramp up but that it is still on track to triple AmeriCorps slots to 250,000 over the next eight years.
