Washington Catholic Charities Adds Pledge on Church Tenets for New Hires

March 15, 2010, 8:00 am

The Washington arm of Catholic Charities has begun requiring new employees to sign a promise that they will not violate church tenets or principles, says The Washington Post.

The language on church teaching was added March 3 to hiring letters that all new staff members must sign. Erik Salmi, a spokesman for the charity, said the addition did not reflect a policy change but is in keeping with what workers are told during training.

Mr. Salmi said the new clause was not a response to Washington’s legalization of gay marriage, which took effect March 3, but reflected a longer-term concern that workers adhere to Catholic teachings. The organization announced earlier this month that it would change its policies on health coverage for employees’ families to avoid offering benefits to same-sex spouses.

Until the Pope stops the priests from abusing children and continuing in their pastoral duties, I think the mailroom clerk should be allowed to practice birth control.
