With Attendance Down, Metropolitan Opera Drops Ticket Prices

February 27, 2013, 10:52 am

The Metropolitan Opera will reduce ticket prices by an average of 10 percent for the 2013-14 season in an effort to reverse a decline in attendance that followed a price hike this season, writes The New York Times.

The average price of a night at the opera will drop from $174 to $156 under the new plan, which comes after a 10 percent increase in ticket costs that general manager Peter Gelb said Met officials “did not feel it was as successful as it might have been.”

Projected attendance for the 2012-13 season is 81 percent of capacity, compared to 84 percent last year. Mr. Gelb said “cannibalization” of the Met’s audience by its high-definition movie-theater broadcasts of productions also contributed to the audience drop.
