For the second year in a row, Alexandria, Va.; Cambridge, Mass.; and Arlington, Va., topped a 2010 ranking of cities whose residents gave the most online, according to a list released this week by Convio, a fund-raising software company in Austin, Tex.
Convio surveyed 273 cities with a total population of more than 100,000 and based its ranking on per-capita online giving and total amount donated online through the company’s software platform, which was $1.3-billion in 2010.
The rest of the top 10 cities include, from top to bottom: Seattle; Washington; Berkeley, Calif.; San Francisco; St. Louis; Ann Arbor, Mich.; and Minneapolis.
Residents of these cities last year donated more than $389-million last year, Convio says. The average gift increased to $65 in 2010 from $62 in 2009.
“If you are a nonprofit in those cities and you don’t have an online presence, you’re probably missing out on opportunities,” says Tad Druart, a Convio spokesman. Instead of giving locally, some of these donors gave to national organizations or to cities outside where they’re living, he added.
Here’s where these generous cities are located:

One Response to The Top 10 Cities for Raising Money Online

It’s not surprising that Alexandria, VA and Arlington, VA would be two of the cities with the highest online donations. Those cities are both in the DC area and are often the official “home of record” for people who live and work overseas with the State Department, USAID, the military or international organizations. Donating online is the logical choice over mailing a check.
