American Red Cross Creates Foursquare Badge for Blood Donors

November 17, 2010, 4:06 pm

Along with watching a movie and getting a free cookie, some regular blood donors can now add one more ritual to the routine: checking in on Foursquare.

The American Red Cross today announced that it has created a new custom Foursquare badge, awarded to people who use the social-networking tool to announce their location at blood-donor sites.

“Obviously, it rewards existing donors, and we hope it becomes something that helps passionate Foursquare users who are always seeking new badges to become blood donors,” said Wendy Harman, director of social media at American Red Cross, who requested the badge from Foursquare several months ago. “It’s just a really exciting experiment.”

Several businesses and nonprofits have found ways to reward visitors and give incentives for customer loyalty on Foursquare, which now claims more than 4-million users worldwide.

And some nonprofit groups, such as Big Love Little Hearts in Chicago, have found ways to use Foursquare as a fund-raising tool. Estrella Rosenberg, the charity’s executive director, explained how her group is using Foursquare during a recent live discussion with The Chronicle.

The Red Cross, however, appears to be among the first charities to have created a Foursquare badge. But there could be others. If you know of other nonprofit groups that have Foursquare badges, share your example in the comments section below.

And if you’ve developed other ways of using Foursquare for your organization, we’d love to hear your examples.
