Nonprofits Win Awards for Activism and Sharing News

The Public Broadcasting Service was among many nonprofits that earned top prizes for online efforts in this year’s Webby Awards.

The awards, which seek to honor the best Internet offers, are actually two sets of prizes. The first are “People’s Voice” awards that are based on a public vote. Nominees in each category can also win awards based on a review by Internet experts.

For “best nonprofit Web site,” PBS was the People’s Voice winner, while Historypin, a mapping project that seeks to connect people of different generations, won the judge’s award. Historypin was created by Wearewhatdo, a nonprofit effort to designed to make it easy for people find ways to help others each day.

Avaaz.org, which focuses on issues such as poverty, corruption, and climate change, won the People’s Voice award for best Web site on activism. Avaaz is the word for voice in several languages.
