YouTube Adds Tool to Hide Identities in Sensitive Videos

YouTube has released a new feature to help nonprofits and activists protect the identities of people who appear in their videos with the push of a button.

The new tool allows people posting a video to blur all of the faces appearing in their work, making it much more difficult to identify people.

In a blog post Wednesday, YouTube cautioned that the technology is still new and may have trouble detecting the faces that are supposed to be blurred, particularly if they are partially covered or at certain angles. It also warned that the system could miss a frame, which would make it possible for viewers to figure out who was in the blurred image.

You can learn more about the new tool on YouTube’s blog.

YouTube in recent weeks has turned its focus to helping nonprofits create more powerful, effective videos, with a new “playbook” guide and a chance to participate in a one-day video boot camp in San Francisco.

Since YouTube started its Nonprofit Program in 2007, 16,000 organizations in the United States, Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom have joined. Nonprofits …

Google Simplifies and Expands Its Online Offerings

Google on Wednesday made public a simplified application for its free and discounted nonprofit services.

Organizations now can apply just once at google.com/nonprofits to receive all of the nonprofit-only services offered by the technology company, including Google Grants for online advertising, expanded YouTube channels, Google Apps software, and premium Google Earth features.

Previously, nonprofits had to complete separate applications for each product and wait for each to be approved. The new single application should be processed in about 30 days, said Kirsten Olsen Cahill, a Google.org product marketing manager.

“We’re serious about nonprofits and investing real time and resources into helping this sector and helping them grow their impact,” Ms. Cahill said.

Organizations like the Muscular Dystrophy Association have seen success with Google’s offerings, particularly …
