I will graduate law schoot this May. After three years of law school I'm thinking of using my law school education in the nonprofit fund-raising world. I have experience in nonprofits, primarily in the environmental field. I would like to know if this is a good career path. I'm concerned about the salary, high turnover, and other concerns listed on this message board. I really want to work at a nonprofit and still be able to pay off loans. I believe that becoming a planned-giving officer or taking other fund-raising role would help me fulfill this. Is this true? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Jenna,

I graduated law school in 2000, and worked at a few firms until this fall, when I joined a small non-profit doing development. Regardless of the fact that I was laid off, I believe that your legal writing skills will benefit any organization you join. However, the money is not there and I was and continue to struggle with my loans. Some schools have programs where, if you work for a nonprofit group, they'll cover some or all of your loans -- the catch is that the work has to be in a "lawyer" capacity. So, go for it but beware that it's a tough road. Good luck!!

Yes, that is good. You can use your law school education in the nonprofit fund-raising world. I will support you for that.
