I would like to know if employment agencies are the real deal. I have been registered with a nonprofit placement agency for one year and have been sent out on only one short-term assignment. I contact the recruiter once a week, sometimes he tells me about assignments that don't develop or about the usual data-entry positions that I am not interested in. I am new to the field but have a few years work experience that I know could transfer over. I don't know anybody in the field and I want to get my foot in the door and work. Help!

Wendy:

As a former information-technology recruiter, I can say that weekly contact is best. It is also best if your recruiter has a clear picture of what you are looking for, what you will consider, and what you won't consider.

I am living in the Kansas City area but don't know how to locate recruiters who specialize in nonprofit placements or if there are any here. I could use some assistance.

Do a search on the internet for recruiters and nonprofits.  Also, the recruiter may not necessarily be in the location that you want to work in.
