Can someone give me a way to find out if a particular nonprofit organization is in fact registered with the IRS as a 501(c)3 corpoation? Is there a list, telephone number, or Web site that lists these corporations?

Thanks.

The organization should be able to give you a copy of their letter from the IRS which designated their status 501(c)3.  It will be dated as of the award of that status. It is commonly requested for organizations to include a copy of this in all grant requests.

John:

You may ask any lawyer and they will tell what to look for. Also the number and name is listed with all states in their captial as a matter of law. If a group is a 501(c)3, it is proud of it and can give you their number.
Look them up, for they should be listed.

This probably sounds like a dumb question... but if an organization has a 501(c)3, is that like a code number that they can give you?

Is it different from their tax ID number?

Thank you!
