I'd like to extend the live discussion we had today on the nonprofit job market and the recession into this space. What were your reactions to the information? Would you like to discuss any of the points raised in the chat? Here's your opportunity to continue the conversation.

Thank you for extending this discussion. Since I graduated from college five years ago, I have had a string of successful positions at nonprofits but have had the unfortunate experience of working for rather inexperienced -and shall I say, "awful"- managers/supervisors. I am now back in the job market and want to know what advice you have for applicants during the interviewing process to gauge whether a manager will be weak or strong.

when you are in the interview and it's your chance to ask questions, you should ask the supervisor (assuming that they are doing the interview) what do they do to support direct reports, how do help direct reports find professional development, and you should ask are there professional development opportunities available for staff.

I am in the same boat. I haven't had to interview in 6 yrs and tommorow I have my first. I am sure a lot of people are in this same boat. I took some interviewing classes at the local career center here in Seattle. Much of the information was rather obvious so I am looking for something that will give me the extra edge over my competition

There are a number of resources online which will help you prepare for the interview process. The main thing is to be prepared. Good preparation will improve your confidence and help you stand out from the other applicants.
Good luck!

I worked for a non profit hospital, in Little Rock, AR, they have been laying off a lot of employees or making them take early retirement. I worked there for 6 years. I wish I knew how to prepare better for interviews. With a lot of us laid off, there is competition for jobs here in Arkansas.

The recession struck almost everyone. I think the economy is starting to recover, there will be positions available soon. Good luck with your search.
