The Chronicle's current issue includes an examination of how some nonprofit groups are using the social-networking site Twitter to raise awareness and money: http://philanthropy.com/free/articles/v21/i09/09001401.htm

As an extension of that story, I'd like to use this forum as a place to collect a list of charities, foundations, and others in the nonprofit world that are using Twitter. Please feel free to share the name of your group and your Twitter handle -- and share some info on how you are using the tool for your group.

And we won't even limit you to 140 characters.

@magdrl

The Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League is a 9-state organization dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and finding homes for abandoned, neglected or abused Great Danes. We are staffed entirely by volunteers. We recently started on twitter, and have been encouraged by the extra attention we're getting. Learn more about us at www.magdrl.org.

@beckstrand

Beckstrand Cancer Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to improving and enhancing the quality of life of cancer patients and their families. We do this by providing a unique combination of financial assistance and patient advocacy. We use Twitter to support our blog topics and Facebook posts, in addition to driving traffic to our mailing list sign-up online. It's opened us up to entirely new audiences and attracts attention from Twitterers who are specifically seeking out our cause. Learn more about Beckstrand Cancer Foundation at http://www.beckstrand.org and http://www.flutterblogger.wordpress.com.

I post information regarding our Center's research (Center for High Impact Philanthropy) and also news and research related to the world of philanthropy, social impact, social entrepreneurship, social media, and nonprofits. I just started about 3 weeks ago but am already hooked. Smiley

I post comments about women and philanthropy; women working their way out of poverty; inspirational quotes; thoughtprovoking questions; world news about about developing countries where Opportunity International serves 1.2 million microfinance clients.

Every now and then I feature our www.optinnow.org site as a place where people can learn more about the power of microfinance and have the ability to help fund a loan for a poor working entrepeneur.
