The Chronicle recently played host to a live online discussion with Rosetta Thurman and Allison Jones about how young nonprofit professionals can stand out and manage their careers during the recession.
The conversation raised some great questions -- and also showed a thirst among many professionals to build networks and share ideas.
This thread is an early attempt to continue this discussion. Please feel free to use this thread as a launching point for sharing ideas and discussing questions that arose in the discussion.

One thing you can do is not get caught up in what everyone else is doing. It is a natural thing to think, oh everyone is doing this technique because it most work. While it might work at first, once everyone starts doing the same thing it will start to become boring and unoriginal.

That is very true and has worked for me on many occasions. You have to try to be different and stand out (but of course not so much that then it ends up being bad standing out)! good luck!

There is nothing really wrong with doing the same techniques as others do, especially if you think it will also work for you. However one must try to put a little bit of their own ideas to that same technique, vamp it up a little bit to make it more personal rather than just copy it from others. You can try to be different in that way.

In a recession, there's no better time to follow your dreams and do what you love - precisely because that's how you get noticed by prospective employers.

Standing out in a crowd especially in the current times is getting harder. Here in Thailand we are constantly re inventing ourselves to stay ahead of the curve. Our volunteers work tirelessly in try to build our non profit charity. Focusing on our plan is what keeps us going and driven. Real Estate PhuketPhuket ThailandFree Classified AdsHow To Detox

Everybody is suffering with the recession…
I believe that you should create websites with many ads, and make money with them. This is how all websites that provide free content make money online. You’ll need traffic, but you can use your actual website and link to these sites. There is nothing wrong with advertisement.

doing something truly remarkable is one thing that will make sure that you stand out....
like presenting new ways to make your work more efficient and faster, improving your skills, and always look for something new and innovative in a way that everybody will be motivated....

We should have dream about what we need to achieve in our life, its true that its tough to do something in the time of recession. But if we do hardwork then its sure we will get the benefits for that work. we should be creative enough to stand out in a crowd.

I think so too. We should make our own way to overcome recession, we should make things that will help ourselves live.
I also think that its is not bad to do the same method as others do. But it is better if you make some adjustment by adding a certain system to make it even productive. Just think of something that will make your life easier and productive.
