How Study Measured Community Connections

Social Connections: a Scorecard for 40 Regions

Based on results of a survey of nearly 30,000 Americans, researchers have rated the following regions to determine how well they fare in various measures of community connections. Researchers used a base line of 100, so scores above 100 show that a city or region measured above average for an area with similar demographics; scores below 100 are less than average.

Giving and volunteering Membership in charities and other groups Civic leadership Religious leadership Social trust Trust between races Diversity of social networks Involvement in politics Participation in political protests Informal socializing Egalitarian civic participation
