Disaster-Response Efforts Raise More Than $675-Million
More than $675-million has been raised by disaster-relief organizations responding to the September 11 attacks.The American Red Cross has raised at least $211-million. In addition:
- More than $120-million has been donated to the September 11th Fund, created by the New York Community Trust and United Way of New York City.
- "America: A Tribute to Heroes," a two-hour telethon that was broadcast on 35 television networks last Friday, pulled in over an estimated $150-million for the September 11th Telethon Fund.
- Foundations and corporations have made more than $153-million in grants to organizations not associated with the Red Cross or the September 11th Fund.
Catholic Charities USA has raised about $1-million. In the first seven days after the attacks, $200,000 came in through the organization's Web site, which is six times the charity's normal volume. Another $375,000 was donated via Catholic Charities' toll-free telephone number.
