Two-Thirds of September 11 Donations Have Been Distributed, Chronicle Survey Finds

Nearly two-thirds of the $2.2-billion that donors contributed to September 11 causes have been distributed, according to a new Chronicle of Philanthropy survey.

The survey found that:

  • Of 30 organizations surveyed, the total amount distributed was $1.4-million.

  • The American Red Cross raised 44 percent of all that was donated, or $988.8-million. The charity has so far given away 60 percent of its funds.

  • Twenty of the organizations continue to accept contributions; the others refuse to take any more money for September 11 recovery efforts.

The Chronicle survey was compiled by Marni D. Larose.
