September 11 Donations: How Much Charities Have Raised and Distributed

The Liberty Disaster Relief Fund distributed $799-million to provide immediate relief for victims and their families as well as to help recovery workers and people who were displaced from their homes or jobs or were otherwise economically harmed by the attacks; in addition the fund has earmarked $215-million for long-term mental-health treatment of families directly affected by the September 11 terrorist attacks. The remaining $58-million were spent on administrative costs. The fund continues to accept contributions.

Two funds—the AmeriCares Heroes' Fund, and Aid for Terrorist Attack Victims—have distributed $9,158,000 to support immediate family members of the New York firefighters, police officers, emergency-medical workers, and employees of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey who died in the attacks. The funds no longer accept contributions.

The Terrorist Attack Relief Fund has distributed all contributions to local Catholic Charities affiliates providing immediate and long-term assistance to families affected by the attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Center. The fund no longer accepts contributions.

Three funds—the National Disaster Fund, Operation Compassion Under Fire, and Operation Noble Eagle—have distributed $87-million to help victims and their families pay for housing, utilities, food, transportation, insurance, and other needs.The funds no longer solict donations.

The American Families Assistance Fund is providing training for trauma counselors, grants for widows and orphans of firefighters and police officers who were killed as a result of the attacks, and assistance to people who lost family members in the events of September 11 or became unemployed. The fund continues to accept donations.

The Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund helps pay for the postsecondary education of the children and spouses of those killed or severely injured in the September 11 attacks. The fund is expected to operate for 25 to 30 years. It has distributed $1,957,326 to 206 students. The fund continues to accept contributions.

The FEEA World Trade Center/Pentagon Fund paid travel expenses for families of federal employees killed in the September 11 attacks to attend memorial and burial services and to help them meet their rent obligations, make loan repayments, and pay college tuition. The fund helped pay rent, utility, and other bills of postal employees who were unable to work as a result of the anthrax attacks. Its remaining funds will be used to provide full college scholarships for victims' children. The fund no longer accepts contributions.

The Victims Relief Fund distributed money to organizations in New York and Washington that are working directly with victims of the attacks and their families. The remaining money was transferred to the United Jewish Endowment Fund for other needs resulting from the September 11 attacks. The relief fund no longer accepts contributions.

The 911 Victims Children's Fund provided short-term expenses such as day care and groceries, as well as long-term expenses such as college tuition. The Windows of Hope Relief Fund received $30,000 to assist the families of the 72 employees of the World Trade Center Club and Windows on the World restaurant, located at the top of the World Trade Center, who died in the attacks. The fund also provided $90,000 to send children who were affected by the attacks to a camp in upstate New York. The fund continues to accept contributions.

The September 11 Disaster Relief Fund spent $167,000 on camp programs for the children of victims, and $80,000 to purchase nine temporary shelters that gave workers a place to rest. It also provided $400,000 for short-term financial assistance for victims, supplies for relief workers in New York and Washington, and rent for a warehouse to store and sort supplies for the recovery effort. The remainder will support the long-term programs developed for retraining, educating, and counseling those affected directly by the September 11 attacks, including members of Lions Clubs in New York, Washington, and other affected cities. The fund continues to accept contributions.

The September 11th Fund has distributed $379-million in cash to assist victims and families, to help organizations provide other services to victims and families, such as grief counseling and job retraining, and to provide services to community organizations affected by the attacks; $55-million in grants and loans to affected community organizations; and $10-million cash reimbursement to organizations that were involved in rescue and recovery efforts. The remaining $82-million will be used to provide ongoing mental health services, health care, employment assistance, and legal assistance to victims and their families. The fund has not accepted donations since January, 2002.

The New York State World Trade Center Relief Fund has distributed $63-million to aid families and dependents of victims of the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and of the plane crash in Pennsylvania. The fund continues to accept contributions.

The Robin Hood Relief Fund has distributed $36.7-million to organizations that work with families of the victims and people who were affected by the attacks. It puts particular emphasis on helping groups that support low-income people who were affected by the attacks. In addition, the fund distributed $15.8-million in direct aid to the families of victims of the World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks, including people whose relatives were on the planes used in the attacks. The fund continues to accept donations.

The Rotary Fund for Victims of the September 11th Tragedy provides cash awards and college scholarships for the families of the victims who died in the attacks or were adversely affected by the events of September 11. The fund continues to accept contributions.

The Tides 9/11 Fund has awarded grants of up to $20,000 each to 55 nonprofit groups to provide immediate assistance to working poor people who were affected by the attacks; to promote tolerance, civil liberties, and human rights; and to provide alternative coverage in the news and other media of the complex political, social, and economic history of the crisis.

The September 11th Relief Fund helped workers and their families who were affected by the terrorist attacks. The fund no longer accepts contributions.

The UJC Emergency Relief Fund reimbursed local charities supported by Jewish federations for payments made to victims of the attacks and their families to cover mortgage, bereavement travel, counseling, services for victims, scholarship assistance for education, and other expenses. The fund does not accept new contributions.

The 9-11 Respiratory Assistance Fund has distributed $30,000 to the Visiting Nurse Service of New York City to help people who do not have medical insurance pay for the treatment of respiratory illnesses resulting from the attacks; $17,000 has been used to support Operation Return Home, a program to inform residents about proper cleanup of dust and debris from their homes and businesses, and to distribute air purifiers and vacuum cleaners to buildings affected by the disaster. Another $15,000 has enabled an environmental-health consultant to assist the American Lung Association of New York. An additional $55,000 went to local research resulting from the attacks. The remaining funds were distributed for community education and research.

The ASPCA Disaster Relief Fund provided rescue assistance, medical treatment, and new or temporary homes for pets whose owners were hurt or killed as a result of the September 11 attacks. Remaining funds will go to local shelters for disaster relief.

The Victim Relief Fund has distributed $61,230 to help the spouses and children of victims of the World Trade Center attacks. This organization continues to accept donations.

The Fund for World Trade Center Greenmarket Farmers has distributed money to farmers who sustained losses after the attacks on the World Trade Center that were not covered by insurance. Distributions also supported farmers who lost revenue at other markets in Manhattan that were closed following the attacks. The fund continues to accept contributions.

The New York Fire Fighters 9-11 Disaster Relief Fund provided financial assistance to the families of firefighters who were killed. Each of the 347 families supported by this fund has received at least $446,685. This fund no longer accepts donations.

The NIAF Twin Towers Relief Fund paid for educational needs of the children of firefighters, rescue workers, and medical personnel who died in the attacks on the World Trade Center. The fund no longer accepts donations.

The Port Authority Police World Trade Disaster Survivors Fund is providing assistance to the families of Port Authority Police Officers who were killed or injured during the World Trade Center attacks. The fund continues to acept contributions.

The Twin Towers Fund assisted 438 families of members of the New York City Fire Department and its Emergency Medical Services Command, the New York City Police Department, the Port Authority of New York, the New Jersey Police Department, and rescue workers from other government offices who were killed or seriously injured in the attacks on the World Trade Center. The fund no longer accepts contributions.

The Pentagon Victims Fund has distributed $400,000 for travel, funeral, educational, mortgage, and general living expenses fo soldiers who were injured in the attack on the Pentagon, as well as for the families of those who died. The remaining money will be used to support the postsecondary education of the children and spouses of the soldiers who were killed or severely wounded in the Pentagon attack. The fund no longer accepts donations.

The Survivors' Fund is providing long-term medical, educational, and psychological support services to families and survivors affected by the attack on the Pentagon. The fund continues to accept contributions.

The Pentagon Assistance Fund provides financial aid for the college education of dependent children and spouses of Navy and Marine Corps personnel killed during the attack on the Pentagon and during Operation Enduring Freedom. The fund is no longer solicits donations.
