Position: Managing Director, Strategy & Development

Summary:
The Managing Director of Strategy and Development will lead our
campaign to raise 68 million dollars over the next 5 years in
operating revenue and reserves. The Managing Director of Strategy
& Development (MD, SD) will report directly to and work closely
with the Executive Director on setting and executing high level
development strategy, manage a team of talented development
professionals, and work directly with donors and prospects. Teach
For America in Los Angeles intends to triple its funding base in
the next 5 years in order to support our efforts to grow our
presence in Los Angeles to nearly 600 corps members in 2015. This
individual must be deeply committed to Teach For America's mission,
comfortable in an entrepreneurial environment, possess an
exceptionally high level of personal responsibility, and be equally
comfortable managing back end processes, managing a team, engaging
with donors, and creating strategy. This position is located in Los
Angeles, CA.
Responsibilities:
Working closely with the executive director and the regional board
of advisors to create and execute the regional strategic and
operational plans to ensure that the region maximizes
opportunities, meets its goals, and significantly grows funding
while building long-term sustainability
Analyzing historical and market data to set ambitious yet feasible
revenue, donor quantity and retention goals for the next three
years, and interim benchmarks
Regularly assessing progress to goals and adjusting course as
necessary
Developing and executing pitches and strategies to reach goals for
different segments
Cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding donors through external
meetings, events, and correspondence
Supporting the executive director in regional advisory board
management by developing the regional board, preparing for board
meetings, and corresponding with board members
Lead focused growth in individual giving, corporate giving, and
foundation giving, with a particular emphasis on major gifts tied
to our growth campaign ($100,000+ multi-year gifts)Serving on the
Los Angeles regional leadership team to set direction and tone for
our organization's presence in our geographic region
Collaborating with the region's district strategy team to secure
local public funding
Collaborating with the region's district strategy team, leadership
in our region, and national leadership to secure state funding as
needed
Collaborating with the region's program team and alumni teams to
ensure our teacher and alumni impact narrative is compelling and
accurate
Managing a development team of five full-time development staff to
progress toward goals and develop them as professionals.
Specifically ensuring the team:
Strategically builds and manages their donor portfolios, by
designing and implementing donor engagement plans
Conducts excellent donor interactions and communications (i.e.,
events, operations, tracking systems and donor communications
required to support the region's fundraising efforts are tightly
executed and highly effective)
Manages the region's relationship with public funding agencies and
ensuring compliance with these agencies' requirements
Qualifications:
Bachelors degree required
5+ years experience strongly preferred
Management experience strongly preferred, with demonstrated results
leading teams to achieve ambitious results
Exceptional goal orientation and an excellent strategic thinker
with a proven track record of success
Excellent verbal and written communicator: can speak compellingly
about our organization, mission, and goals and has a mature
presence
Ability to build strong relationships with various types of people
and to motivate superiors, peers, and direct reports to meet
ambitious goals
Comfortable and excited about managing in entrepreneurial
setting
Ability to operate with purpose, urgency, and accuracy in a
fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
Uncommon level of personal responsibility and drive towards
exceedingly ambitious goals
Compensation and Benefits:
Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.
