ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Founded in 1951, The Nature Conservancy is a
not-for-profit organization dedicated to protecting lands and water
for people and nature. Over the 60 years since our founding, we
have grown to be the largest single conservation organization in
the US and the world. The Nature Conservancy has just celebrated 50
years of conservation success in New Hampshire, where we seek a
highly experienced fundraiser to lead an established philanthropy
program through the evolution into a true major gifts program. The
Director of Philanthropy reports to the State Director and is
responsible for the oversight, planning and implementation of a
comprehensive philanthropy program that secures the significant
financial resources (current fiscal year private fundraising goal
of $1,000,000) from donors within New Hampshire to support
conservation goals in New Hampshire, New England and around the
world. S/he will ensure significant gifts for TNC's global and
local conservation priorities by helping donors articulate their
passion for conservation in order to facilitate the largest gifts
possible to The Nature Conservancy. The Director will develop and
implement a multi-year, philanthropic vision and plan for New
Hampshire that aligns with The Nature Conservancy's global
priorities, while recognizing the distinctive needs of key places
and issues in the New Hampshire landscape and as it relates to
major natural systems such as the Northern Appalachian forest, the
Connecticut River and the Gulf of Maine. The Director of
Philanthropy engages in all major gifts functions, which may
include planned giving, major and principal gifts, donor
prospecting and research, and special multi-year fundraising
campaigns and which takes advantage of the resources and support
provided by a multi-tiered, complex global organization. S/he
serves as an active member of the Chapter's executive management
team, working collaboratively to establish fundraising goals,
support long-term strategic planning and fiscal management, and
ensure integration of priorities within the Philanthropy Program.
The Director of Philanthropy hires, manages, and establishes goals
for the Philanthropy Manager and collaborates closely with other
operating unit External Relations, Grants and Marketing staff. S/he
motivates and coordinates the philanthropy efforts of members of a
multi-disciplinary chapter staff and volunteers, including donor
cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. The Director of
Philanthropy serves with the State Director to work with the Board
of Trustees and leads the development committee and any ad hoc
campaign committees of the Board. S/he is also responsible for the
cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of the Chapter's major
gift donors and prospects. S/he focuses on long-range strategic
priorities, advances the Conservancy's goals and communicates a
broad vision to others. S/he understands and complies with all TNC
gift-related policies and procedures and ensures ethical
compliance, as defined by the Association for Fundraising
Professionals. The Director of Philanthropy has broad financial
responsibility in setting and meeting fundraising objectives,
tracking gifts, interpreting financial reports, and developing and
administering departmental budget.
The following attributes would enhance a candidate's potential for
success:
· The capacity to embrace and effectively communicate the
Conservancy's mission and its relevance to the environment, the
economy and the health of human communities. And a passion for
nature, wildlife and/or the outdoors.
· Proven ability to use strong strategic thinking skills to create
a vision for philanthropy in New Hampshire, develop and implement a
strategic fundraising plan for achieving that vision and lead an
aggressive and comprehensive fundraising program.
· Considerable knowledge of and experience working in
philanthropic communities within the state and networks of social
and professional relationships within it.
· A personal enthusiasm with positive and optimistic attitude that
models behavior for and motivates staff and volunteers. Broad
experience leading staff, managing projects virtually, and
collaborating with and influencing staff s/he does not directly
supervise. Experience, sincere interest and pleasure in developing
fundraising talent in professional staff and volunteers.
· Experience working for a national, global and/or highly
decentralized organization and an understanding of how partnerships
with other Conservancy Chapters, country programs and external
organizations can enhance New Hampshire's fundraising
efforts.

· Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications or related field
and at least 7 years' fundraising experience.

lead, set objectives and manage performance of staff, as part of a
large multi-disciplinary team. Ability to foster an environment of
creativity and professional growth.

giving and solicitation and capital campaigns.
· Proven success in asking for and closing major gifts and
building and maintaining long-term relationships with fundraising
