Report to the Associate Vice President for Development and Chief Development Officer for Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Penn State University College of Medicine. The Executive Director of Development provides leadership and day-to-day management for Penn State Hershey Medical Center's major gifts team. The Executive Director oversees a team of 5 professional and 2 administrative staff. Conceptualize, plan, and execute a strategic and coordinated program of fundraising including major gifts ($50,000 or more), and planned giving within the framework of top funding priorities for Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and the College of Medicine. As a senior-member of the Penn State Hershey Development and Alumni Relations team, the Executive Director for Development works closely with the Associate Vice President for Development, University Development staff, Penn State Hershey Medical Center and College of Medicine leadership to translate hospital, clinical department, and patient care fundraising priorities and needs into persuasive proposals and compelling gift and grant opportunities. The Executive Director plays an integral role in strategic and programmatic planning within the division and will help to develop appropriate fundraising plans to support the priorities that emerge from this process. Develop an understanding of the educational, research, clinical, and financial needs and goals of Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and College of Medicine. Set a strategic direction for the major gifts teamâ??which includes identifying priorities, policies, strategies, and tactics to support the overall goals of Development team. Set appropriate annual production goals, and monitor progress on a regular basis in order to maximize major gift staff performance in prospect identification, strategy development, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship activities, and physician and volunteer engagement. Personally manage and staff a portfolio of key major gift level ($50,000 and above) donors and prospects; maintain frequent contact with these constituents while engaging institutional leadershipâ??including the Associate Vice President for Development, Dean/CEO, volunteers, and key members of the Penn State University administrative leadershipâ??in appropriate donor and/or prospect related efforts. Provide leadership and strategic direction for Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute fundraising. Serve as chief fundraiser for the Institute. Provide leadership and oversight for Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute Development Committee. Along with the Associate Vice President, provide leadership and support to the Penn State Hershey Medical Center Campaign Cabinet and Campaign Chair through 2014. Work closely and collaboratively with Director of Individual Giving and Prospect Management to ensure coordination of fundraising efforts with the grateful patient and families program. Assist in setting the strategic direction for the implementation, coordination of the grateful patient and families fundraising program, ensuring appropriate follow-up steps are taken by front line fundraisers in a timely fashion. Work closely and collaboratively with Director of Development, Children's Health and Community Initiatives team to ensure coordination of fundraising efforts with Children's Hospital, as well as corporate and community constituents. Work collaboratively with Director of Annual Campaigns and Alumni Relations to ensure coordination of fundraising efforts with College of Medicine alumni, patients and friends. Collaborate with institutional leadership, faculty, fundraisers, and development communications staff to translate Medical Center and College of Medicine strategic initiatives and programmatic/capital needs into persuasive proposals and compelling gift/grant opportunities. Conceptualize, direct and implement a strategic planned giving program specific to Penn State Hershey Medical Center and College of Medicine constituents, under the direction of the Associate Vice President and in coordination with the University's Office of Planned Giving. Work with Operations team and development officers to conceptualize strategic events, communications, and other activities to cultivate and steward top-tier gift/grant prospects and donors. Participate with Penn State Hershey Development Senior Management Team in developing Campaign priorities, strategies for implementation, timetables, and communications plans. Develop and sustain appropriate training and career development activities for major gift staff members. Work collaboratively with colleagues across University Development. Manage and oversee major gifts unit budget. Typically requires a Master's degree or higher plus thirteen years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be willing to travel and work evenings and weekends as needed. The successful candidate must possess exemplary interpersonal skills and demonstrate a genuine appreciation in working with diverse audiences. Strong leadership experience with demonstrated ability to mentor, manage, and motivate a team of experienced and entry-level major gifts officers. In-depth experience in and knowledge of both individual and organizational major gift/grant (i.e., $50,000 and above) fundraising in a higher education environment. Demonstrated success in securing major gift commitments. Achievement in a broad-based development leadership role in a complex organization--preferably during a campaign in a medical/academic medical center or scientific environment. Superior oral and written communication skills reflecting ability to translate complex technical concepts into compelling fundraising proposals. Direct experience working with volunteers and volunteer groups, reflecting ability to recruit, motivate, and manage volunteer leadership. Ability to articulate a compelling case for major philanthropic support for priority programs, projects, and activities to prospects. Demonstrated effectiveness in managing multiple projects and solicitations simultaneously. Ability to function effectively in a complex organizational environment demanding high energy level, discretion, patience, enthusiasm, and humor.
