Phi Delta Theta Foundation
Senior Vice President for Development
Position Senior Vice President for Development
Location Oxford, Ohio
Reporting Relationship Mr. Robert A. Biggs, President
Education A Bachelor's degree in an appropriate field; an advanced
degree is strongly preferred.
Phi Delta Theta International Fraternity
Since the founding of Phi Delta Theta in 1848 at Miami University
in Oxford, Ohio, more than 235,000 men have been guided by the
"Cardinal Principles" of the cultivation of friendship among its
members, the acquirement individually of a high degree of mental
culture, and the attainment personally of a high standard of
morality. The mission of Phi Delta Theta is to strengthen men for
life by building on the tradition of the fraternity's core values:
friendship, sound learning and rectitude.
The Fraternity teaches men that these areas of commitment, outlined
in The Bond of Phi Delta Theta, are not to be viewed as separate
ideals, but as areas of discipline for daily life. Developments
intellectually, in leadership, and human service (to name a few)
are vital to the men of Phi Delta Theta. A member will support, and
in turn have the support of, his brothers as these principles are
lived out in their daily lives.
Phi Delta Theta has initiated many men who have made notable
achievements and contributions to their varied fields of interest
and have demonstrated a solid commitment to the Cardinal Principles
stated above.
These Phi Delts include Frank Lloyd Wright, Neil Armstrong, James
A. Baker, Lou Gehrig, Sam Nunn, J. Willard Marriott and Wes Welker,
to name but a handful of countless significant contributors.
Consistent with the Cardinal Principles is the International
Fraternity's own commitment to appropriate campus behavior.
Specifically it addressed two major issues: alcohol and hazing. In
February, 1997, the General Council announced the Alcohol-free
Housing Policy to the world. Chapters were given more than three
years to implement this paradigm shift on their campus and all
properties were alcohol-free by the implementation date of July 1,
2000.
Phi Delta Theta does not condone any form of hazing. It is contrary
to the purpose of fraternity, let alone Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.
Members can still achieve a close group of men throughout the
organization without hazing and Phi Delta Theta General
Headquarters offers resources to help transplant negative
activities with positive ones.
Since the implementation of these actions, Phi Delta Theta has
undergone one of its largest growth spurts in the history of the
modern fraternity. A recent study conducted by the Fraternity
Executives Association detailed that since 2000 Phi Delta Theta had
colonized and chartered the second most chapters of all
fraternities. This indicates a renewed demand for a values-based
organization from students.
Under the leadership of Foundation President Robert Biggs, the
International Fraternity has strong financial resources now. In
2009, The Phi Delta Theta Foundation received 5,667 gifts from
alumni, undergraduates, parents, undergraduates and friends. This
included gifts from 764 first-time donors. The $2.54 million in
gifts and pledges makes 2009 one of the best years in the
Foundation's 51-year history. The Fraternity has an endowment of
about $6 million. The goal is to increase that number to $20
million by 2020.
POSITION
Phi Delta Theta Foundation (the fund raising arm of the
international fraternity) is seeking a Senior Vice President for
Development to serve as the institution's chief fund raising
officer. The successful candidate will be primarily responsible for
leading the fraternity's development endeavors including annual
giving, major and leadership giving, corporate and foundation
relations, planned giving and donor relations and
stewardship.
As a member of the President's Executive Group, the Senior Vice
President for Development will work closely with other senior
administrative leaders to promote consistent messaging and
meaningful constituent engagement. Additionally, with the support
of a strong Board of Trustees, the Senior Vice President for
Development will participate in and help drive the strategic
planning process and the articulation of capital fund raising
priorities.
This role presents a compelling opportunity to build upon existing
strengths and recent fund raising successes. It will also provide
for long term goals of development and execution of campaign
strategies. Expansion of the donor base and increased philanthropy
to Phi Delta Theta are equally important goals. The Senior Vice
President for Development will enjoy working for a fraternity with
a long, prominent history and international reputation for
excellence; a positive community and friendly culture; and a
committed Board of Trustees which recognizes the need to partner
well with the Senior Vice President for Development.
The Senior Vice President will be located at the Phi Delta Theta
headquarters (building pictured on the front page) in Oxford, Ohio,
the home of Miami University. Oxford is a beautiful town with all
the advantages offered by a well educated small college community
yet is only an hour's drive from Cincinnati and Dayton.
The working environment at the headquarters reflects the standards
of the fraternity itself - warm, caring, supportive, benevolent and
nurturing.
THE OPPORTUNITY
The SVP for Development position offers an exciting opportunity for
an experienced development professional to make an impact and
difference in the growth of Phi Delta Theta's financial resources.
The executive leadership and Board of Trustees have approved a long
term growth plan entitled PHI DELT 2020.
PHI DELT 2020
There are six strategic initiatives in this plan: Growth,
Education, Support, Communication, Capacity and Funding. This last
initiative provides the underpinning for the first five and
describes its mission: "Implement strategies to significantly grow
the Fraternity's Foundation endowment and develop other regular
revenue streams." And within the overall Funding initiative,
specific attention is paid to Endowment, Annual Fund, Merchandising
and Sponsorship and Loyalty and Cause support.
Endowment
To continue major gift initiative by raising $20 million excluding
the scholarship endowment in the Foundation.
Annual Fund
Enhance annual fund program to build lifelong donors while
providing a funding stream that supports foundation operations by
raising $2 million annually.
Merchandising/Sponsorships
Establish a merchandising and sponsorship program that generates
over $500,000 annually by 2020.
Loyalty and Cause Funding
Further develop the Iron Phi program as a selfâ??sustaining
operation that provides at least $200,000 in funding annually to
the Fraternity by 2020 and to further institutionalize the True
Blue Society as a part of Phi Delta Theta culture to generate at
least $275,000 by 2020 for The Scroll and alumni programming.
The responsibilities of this job are clear. They run the gamut of
development activities, starting with creating and developing a
strategic plan to its implementation along with on-going focus on
the annual fund, planned giving, and major and leadership giving,
corporate and foundation relations, donor relations and alumni
relations.
There is an ongoing capital campaign; execution for this key
activity will be paramount for the SVP for Development and his
team. It will take an experienced professional to lead and mould
the development activities to fit the overall development
objectives of the Fraternity.
The Senior Vice President for Development position will have
visibility, attention and emphasis. This person will work closely
with Bob Biggs and his leadership team and the Board of Trustees.
This opportunity presents an exciting and significant career move
for the right person at an outstanding international organization
in a highly desirable community.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Leading the development and refinement of an integrated and
balanced fundraising strategy in a highly competitive market.
Building on the annual campaign, the integrated plan will consider
major and individual gifts programs, planned giving, special
events, and corporate and foundation gifts.
Cultivating, broadening and sustaining committed relationships on
behalf of Phi Delta Theta with brothers, community and business
leaders, the Board of Trustees and other key volunteers, investors,
and senior staff faculty to advance the mission of the Phi Delta
Theta.
Leading the transformation and growth of the development staff and
infrastructure in support of organizational goals, which include
defining and training to evolving roles and skills, developing
required support systems and processes (including relationship
management/CRM), reporting, product knowledge and setting
goals.
Maintaining expert knowledge of current and evolving resource
development trends as well as economic, political, technical, and
general business trends that may impact the Fraternity results to
aid in the calibration of overall organizational efforts.

The successful candidate will have at least ten years of experience
in development and related professional experience in independent
school, higher education institutions or other relevant mission
driven organizations. He will have experience in leading a $20 +
million capital campaign. He will have a clear track record of

well versed at negotiating and closing important capital gifts. The
Senior Vice President for Development will have had successful
