-------------------------------- PHIL'S GUIDE TO FINDING AND CREATING A "PET FRIENDLY" RENTAL Massachusetts SPCA monthly e-newsletter, Mid-summer 2002 -------------------------------- Hello Beth, Phil here. Who can resist letting a cuddly canine such as myself (or a fluffy feline) be your roommate? Lots of people, actually. The reality is that many housing managers don't feel the same way about Rover as you do and are quick to establish a "no pets" policy. Animal lovers know better: having a pet can bring medical, social, and emotional benefits to ALL people. But despite the greater awareness of the role of pets in people's lives, "No Pets Allowed" remains the rule in too many rental properties. For more than 20 years, (before I was even a twinkle in my mother's eye) the MSPCA Pets in Housing program has worked with federal and state housing authorities to promote responsible pet ownership. They've created a workable "pets allowed" policy and enforce laws that allow people, even tenants living in subsidized housing designated for elderly and disabled, to stay with their animals. -------------------------------- LOOKING FOR A "PETS ALLOWED" APARTMENT? Our shelters take in thousands of animals each year whose guardians move into a places that don't allow pets. Are you hoping to avoid that difficult decision?
