Reader Expresses Dismay Over Fund-Raising Certification Comment

To the Editor:

I've just finished reading "Seeking a Seal of Approval" (March 20). I write because I find Jennifer Covington's remark "Laziness is the only good excuse for not getting a CFRE" appalling and insensitive. Ms. Covington seems to have the benefit of working for larger organizations. She should try working in a one- or two-person development operation, one that is also responsible for marketing, public relations, special events, and myriad other responsibilities.

In the very real world of small nonprofits, development professionals often spend 50 to 60 hours a week on the job. And at that, we barely keep our heads above water. I have worked in small offices during most of my 12-year tenure as a fund raiser, and while I have wanted to become certified, I have not had the time or energy to do so. (What little time I could carve out for something like this was given over to service to our profession as a board member of my local Association of Fundraising Professionals chapter.) The other reality is that those who work for small nonprofits simply cannot afford the CFRE. Even at a discounted rate of $350 for members of AFP and other organizations (putting aside the costs of the prep course), it is often well beyond the means of organizations to pay for this. And certainly it is often beyond the means of many individuals, especially those with families to care for.

I think that before Ms. Covington or others insult those of us who have not become certified, she should visit the world in which many of her colleagues live.
