Duties And Responsibilities: Funded in May, 2008, Harvard Catalyst | Harvard Clinical and Translational Science Center (CTSC) continues to assemble its team as it grows into its second year. Harvard Catalyst will facilitate clinical and translational research throughout the 27 Harvard schools and Academic Healthcare Centers (Massachusetts General Hospital, Children's Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, and others) by lowering barriers to inter-institutional research, providing seed funding for collaborative experiments, and helping trainees and faculty gain access to resources. Harvard Catalyst's annual operating budget exceeds $38 million, funded by the NIH and the participating Harvard institutions. Reporting to the Harvard Catalyst Director of Finance and Research Administration and working collaboratively with other finance and grants staff, the Manager of Grants Administration owns and manages a complex $40+ million annual sponsored research portfolio, including but not limited to account set up, allocation of expenditures to grants, preparation of the annual Financial Status Report and the grants management section of the Annual Progress Report. The Manager of Grants Administration is primarily responsible for the accurate and sophisticated interpretation and application of NIH, Harvard and other regulatory guidelines. Prepares complex reports, analysis, financial forecasts and budgets. Responsible for compliance and sub recipient monitoring. Provides information for and advises on high-level decision making to senior leadership. Ensures that all Harvard Catalyst post-award sponsored funding management is compliant, by training and advising other grants management staff. Identifies policies, processes and procedures needing refinement and/or enhancement and makes recommendations for changes to senior management. Provides financial information to the Principal Investigator, the Executive Director and a dozen faculty Program Directors; also provides guidance on pre-award submissions and fiscal management of their programs. Oversees effort reporting. May take on special projects or other duties as needed. This is a grant-funded position through April 30, 2013.
Basic Qualifications: BA required. Must have a background in accounting and finance and 5-7 years of experience.
Additional Qualifications: Harvard and NIH or other Federal Training Grant experience strongly preferred. Master's Degree in accounting, finance, or business preferred. Previous experience in an academic, non-profit or research environment; sponsored accounting strongly preferred. Strong attention to detail. Proven track record of success in managing a range of financial activities. Experience working with grant funds. Experience training and advising staff. Demonstrated ability to work with confidential and privileged information required. Demonstrated ability to negotiate and balance multiple priorities. The successful candidate will also possess good interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills. Excellent Microsoft Excel skills required. Proficiency with MS Office applications is required and familiarity with Harvard Financial systems is strongly preferred.
