Position: Senior Director, Major Gifts - Health Sciences

DESCRIPTION:
Reporting to the Senior Executive Director of Development, Health Sciences (SEDOD-HS), the Senior Director of Major Gifts will oversee the major gift fundraising unit in Health Sciences. The incumbent is responsible for a range of comprehensive development functions focused on the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of individual prospects and donors, with emphasis on gift potential of $1 million and above. The Senior Director of Major Gifts collaborates with Health Sciences Development senior leadership in strategic planning, goal setting and implementation. Ensures coordination and effectiveness of prospect solicitation, events, recognition activities, planned giving proposals, etc., in the context of larger institutional strategies and program goals.
In collaboration with the SEDOD-HS, Central and University Development, Alumni Affairs, Health Sciences faculty, and the Development Office, the Senior Director maintains a portfolio of major and principal gift prospects and devises cultivation, solicitation and closure strategy for each prospect. Focuses on expanding individual philanthropy for Health Sciences programs. In coordination with the SEDOD-HS, the Senior Director advances the development priorities of Health Sciences and works closely with the respective program directors and academic and volunteer leaders as appropriate.
The incumbent will additionally provide leadership to Health Sciences Directors of Development and support staff, promoting staff development, mentoring and training.

QUALIFICATIONS:
* Demonstrated success at raising funds by developing and implementing cultivation and solicitation plans for gifts of $100,000+ from individuals, corporations, and foundation, both local and national.
* Proven experience in the full spectrum of development including gift policies, solicitations, stewardship, donor recognition, and administration.
* Proven success as development officer in a highly sophisticated donor-centered fund-raising environment as a direct-line fund-raiser.
* Demonstrated knowledge in the technique of donor prospect research with the ability to extract the pertinent/critical information from various sources.
* Knowledge of principles and practices for developing and utilizing volunteer leadership and organizing and maintaining volunteer support organizations.
* Knowledge of public relations practices to provide direction to special programs for outreach to prospective and continuing donors.
* Experience in developing, allocating unit budgets, and projecting unit budgetary needs.
* Demonstrated strong organizational, managerial/mentoring and leadership skill with ability to lead by example and encourage collaborative efforts.
* Demonstrated personnel management skills to provide guidance to maintain a strong team of players. Dispense appropriate disciplinary action when necessary.
* Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, or equivalent combination of education and experience, preferably in an academic environment.
* Access to reliable transportation and a valid California Driver's License.
* Willing to work an irregular schedule including evenings and weekends.
