Position: Assistant Vice President, University Development
Organization: University of Toronto
Location: Canada
Date posted: 11/3/2009

Application deadline: 11/25/2009
As Canada's largest university, the University of Toronto has more than 70,000 students in 841 undergraduate programs, 520 graduate programs, 75 doctoral programs, and 42 professional programs on three separate campuses. Recognized as a global leader in research and teaching, U of T has an operating budget of $1.4 billion, research grants and contract support of $845 million, and more than $18 million holdings in a research library that is ranked one of the top five in North America. Established in 1827, the University is currently the 15th-largest employer in the Greater Toronto Area, and has an estimated economic impact on the GTA economy of $5.4 billion.

ADVANCEMENT AT U OF T

The Division of University Advancement (DUA) promotes and supports the University of Toronto by engaging a worldwide community of more than 475,000 alumni, plus many donors and friends. The uniquely integrated structure of University Advancement encourages each division to bring its particular strengths and expertise to the common cause of advancing U of T's relations with alumni, donors, and friends.

In 2003 the University completed the Campaign for the University of Toronto, the most ambitious fund-raising effort in Canadian university history, exceeding the $1 billion dollar goal more than a year ahead of schedule. Since the completion of the Campaign, the University has remained a priority for philanthropic investment by individuals, corporations and foundations worldwide.

The Division of University Advancement at the University of Toronto is now poised to pursue a transformative agenda deeply rooted in the University's vision for growth and innovation. In the quiet phase of a major institutional campaign, the division of University Advancement will see a significant enhancement to its current alumni and development programs. We intend to double fundraising performance on a sustainable basis; enhance the effectiveness and satisfaction of alumni participation and programs; build advancement capacity within and across divisions; create an organization and culture that fosters leadership, initiative, effectiveness, and community; and contribute to the creation of an external relations strategy for a transforming image, reputation and standing of U of T along an axis of differentiation and excellence.

Achieving these goals will require dramatic growth in the capacity to engage alumni, donors and friends, whose tremendous contributions to society inspire thousands in their support of the University. The Division of University Advancement has embarked on an exciting period of renewal in pursuit of this growth. In collaboration with the University's faculties, colleges and campus, the Division is on the verge of a major new program of outreach, leveraging current resources to enhance significantly alumni engagement and fundraising performance.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Led by the Vice President, Advancement, the Division of University Advancement has recently been re-aligned into five departments, each led by a member of the DUA executive team. These departments are: University Development, Divisional Relations and Campaigns, Alumni and Stakeholder Relations, Advancement Communications and Marketing, and Advancement Services. We are seeking an Assistant Vice President, University Development to provide leadership and direction to the University's centrally managed fundraising operations, enhancing their performance, effectiveness and impact in support of the University's highest priorities for growth and innovation.

The AVP University Development will direct staff in central fundraising programs, including principal gifts, gift planning, annual giving, corporate and foundation relations, regional and international development, and stewardship, and will have significant responsibility in advancing fundraising performance across the University. In this capacity, the AVP University Development will play a central role in the planning and implementation of the University's next major campaign, working closely with the Vice President, Advancement, the Assistant Vice President, Divisional Relations and Campaigns, and other members of the executive team within the Division of University Advancement.

The incumbent will develop, lead, and implement strategies aimed at achieving transformational growth, dramatically lifting the University's overall fundraising performance. The incumbent will also assume responsibility for cultivating and soliciting a portfolio of major and principal gift prospects.

We are seeking an individual who can build advancement capacity for principal gifts, major gifts, annual gifts, planned giving and stewardship both centrally and divisionally. The successful candidate will provide exemplary leadership and direction to a high-performance team of advancement professionals, and provide sophisticated guidance and mentorship to advancement leaders throughout the University, in order to increase the impact and effectiveness of staff in advancing University goals. By example and direction, the incumbent will help create an organization and culture that values excellence, initiative, effectiveness, and community, and offers opportunities for professional development and growth.

LIVING IN THE GREATER TORONTO AREA

With a population of over 2.5 million residents, Toronto is both the largest city in Canada and also one of the world's most diverse cities. Almost half of Toronto's population was born outside of Canada, providing the city with a very cosmopolitan and international flavour. Due to the low crime rate, clean environment, high standard of living, excellent public education and healthcare, and friendlier attitudes to diversity, Toronto is consistently rated as one of the world's most livable cities.

Situated on the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario, the city of Toronto is at the heart of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Because of the proximity to the lake and the southerly location within the country, Toronto has a moderate climate with four distinct seasons. Beyond the lakeside location and the availability of sailing, padding, and beaches, outdoor enthusiasts love Toronto's hiking and biking trails, rivers, and natural areas. Toronto also has a very significant arts and culture scene, with more than fifty ballet and dance companies, six opera companies, two symphony orchestras, several international film festivals, and a host of theatres.

As Canada's economic capital, Toronto's leading economic sectors include finance, business services, telecommunications, medical research, education, tourism, sports, film and television, and publishing. A majority of Canada's corporations are headquartered in the Greater Toronto Area.
