Position: Director of Development, College of Arts and Sciences
Organization: American University
Location: D.C.
Date posted: 11/4/2009

American University's place among major universities with first-rate faculties and academic programs grounded in the arts and sciences is secured by its enduring commitment to uncompromising quality in the education of its students. But its distinctive feature, unique in higher education, is its capacity as a national and international university to turn ideas into action and action into service by emphasizing the arts and sciences, then connecting them to the issues of contemporary public affairs, notably in the areas of government, communication, business, law, and international service. Students come from all 50 states and 140 countries to attend its six major schools and colleges.

Founded in 1925, the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) is the largest school or college at the University. With 350 full-time faculty and 1,700 students, and offering 150 different degrees, CAS is home to the departments of anthropology, art, biology, chemistry, computer science, economics, environmental science, history, language and foreign studies, literature, mathematics and statistics, performing arts, philosophy and religion, physics, psychology, and sociology, and the School of Education, Teaching and Health. It also encompasses the AU Museum and Katzen Arts Center.

The Director of Development plans, implements, and oversees the major gift fundraising program ($10,000 and up) for CAS with special emphasis on gifts of $100,000 to $1,000,000+. He/She will manage a portfolio of 150-200 major gift prospects and will direct, supervise, and manage two direct reports to meet individual goals as part of overall CAS objectives. Experience in development with a proven track record of closing gifts of $100,000+ and comfort with 7-figure gift solicitations is required, as well as proven ability to collaborate with a dynamic fundraising dean.
