Position: President and Chief Executive Officer
Organization: August Wilson Center for African American Culture
Location: Pennsylvania
Date posted: 11/5/2009

AUGUST WILSON CENTER FOR AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURE, Pittsburgh, PA

President and Chief Executive Officer

The August Wilson Center for African American Culture (formerly known as the African American Cultural Center of Greater Pittsburgh) is a world-class cultural center housed in a 65,000-square-foot complex in downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. With four exhibition galleries, a theater, an education center, a café, a gift shop, and multipurpose rental spaces available for community programs and events, the August Wilson Center (AWC) joins a select few African American cultural institutions across the country presenting performing and visual arts, humanities and educational programs in a truly state-of-the-art venue.

The Center, which celebrated its grand opening in September 2009, is committed to preserving, interpreting, shaping and presenting the art, culture and history of African Americans in Western Pennsylvania and of people of African descent throughout the world.

AWC's location makes it a stunning addition to Pittsburgh's vibrant Cultural District - a 14-square block area of downtown featuring public parks, art galleries, dining establishments, retail shops, and six major theaters and concert venues, most located in beautifully-restored historic buildings. For more information on AWC, please visit http://www.augustwilsoncenter.org/.

The President and CEO position is a unique, high-profile leadership opportunity for an individual with initiative and an entrepreneurial spirit. She/He will provide the vision, strategic direction and management expertise for one of the country's newest cultural treasures. The President will exert considerable influence over and continue to shape the Center's institutional identity, including helping to determine the right balance of local, regional, national and global focus.

Reporting to AWC's Board, and partnering with a strong executive team, the President will oversee the Center's day-to-day operations and programs. She/He will manage a diverse and dedicated staff of 19 and an annual operating budget of approximately $3.5 to $4.5 million. In addition to solidifying the Center's position as a leading cultural center, the President will be responsible for seeing that the institution operates as a sound business enterprise. During the first year, the President will work very closely with the Board and development staff to complete the capital campaign while continuing to build ongoing operating support. She/He will be expected to take advantage of the current groundswell of interest in the newly-opened Center and make a compelling case for AWC as a not-to-be-missed destination.

The ideal candidate should have: a deep appreciation for African American culture; senior-level experience at successfully managing the staff, operations and fiscal affairs of a significant nonprofit, private or governmental organization; strong business acumen; a track record as a builder and entrepreneur; experience in strategic planning and organizational development; a successful record of cultivating and soliciting major gifts from individuals, government entities, foundations and corporations; political savvy and comfort with broad-based constituencies including artists, legislators, business and community leaders, and others of influence; the ability to generate awareness, excitement and appreciation that leads to buy-in from diverse sectors; the presence and credibility to serve as an effective spokesperson and ambassador for AWC, with outstanding verbal and written communication skills. Experience with a complex cultural institution, museum, arts organization or educational entity known for exciting programs and attracting broad audiences is a plus.

To apply, please forward a detailed cover letter and résumé to the attention of Sandi Haynes at AWC@PhillipsOppenheim.com.
