Background
Community Foundation Sonoma County is a nonprofit charitable organization formed in 1983 by a group of local citizens who wanted to ensure a permanent source of funds for local charitable organizations. Through the support of individual and corporate donations, the Community Foundation has grown to assets of approximately $112 million and more than 400 different funds established by individual donors, community groups and nonprofit organizations. In 2008, the Community Foundation made grants totaling $19 million from these funds to community groups and nonprofit organizations. Since its inception, the Community Foundation and its donors have returned more than $115 million to the community.
Position Description
This position oversees all financial transactions, reports and audits; establishes and maintains relationships with banks and investment managers; purchases and maintains office technology; oversees personnel and benefits administration; and oversees building maintenance/operations.
Finance. The Vice President ensures the availability of cash for operations, appropriate fund level accounting for all revenue and expenses, and prompt verification and payment of bills; manages the budget projection, approval and administration process; and ensures the secure and accurate deposit and investment of all revenues.
Reporting. The Vice President oversees monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting to the Board of Directors; oversees the annual independent audit and the preparation of local, state and federal reports and filings; and prepares responses to external financial and institutional surveys.
Investments. The Vice President assists the Investment Advisory Committee (IAC) in its hiring, monitoring, and periodic in-depth evaluation of investment managers; manages certain investment transactions to maintain cash flows and rebalance investment portfolios under guidelines set and periodically reviewed by the IAC; manages all communications with current and prospective investment management firms.
Technology. The Vice President oversees the day to day operations of the Community Foundation's computer systems; develops technology-driven policies and procedures; manages working relationships with consultants, vendors, internal tech support staff, and end-users to ensure the effective functioning of the network and individual desktops; assists staff in accessing relevant training.
Risk Management. The Vice President establishes and oversees a multi-faceted risk management program including purchase of appropriate insurance coverage's for staff, volunteers, and property, maintenance of strong internal controls to prevent fraud, and management of decision processes to minimize risk.
Personnel. The Vice President oversees personnel policy establishment/implementation and benefits policies/practices; assists the Finance Committee in setting a staff salary structure and annual merit pool comparable to community wage conditions; and advises the President on proposed improvements or changes that are needed to meet market conditions or comply with employment laws and regulations.
Office and Building Operations. The Vice President oversees the financial and physical location by commissioning regular maintenance as needed. In addition, the Vice President oversees and controls the furnishing of all offices and public areas of the Community Foundation, and establishes and oversees systems for use of common space. When necessary, the Vice President also advertises for, selects, and oversees external tenants and addresses other space needs as required. The Vice President establishes and oversees purchasing systems, and protects all capital property through insurance and service contracts. The Vice President also establishes systems for handling incoming and outgoing correspondence.
The Vice President of Finance and Administration works closely with the accounting staff, senior staff, Board of Directors and various committees of Community Foundation Sonoma County. Given the dynamic nature of the Foundation's strategic plan, the job will inevitably grow and change over time. The Vice President's recommendations for these changes, and participation in their implementation, will be a crucial element in advancing the Foundation's overall mission.
Qualifications
Outstanding skills in financial administration, including fund accounting; facility with office technology including Microsoft Excel and Word, and with accounting packages (integrated software preferred); planning, analysis and evaluation skills; budget preparation and management experience. Ideal candidate will be a team player, be flexible, communicate effectively and efficiently, and maintain excellence and accuracy throughout all business functions.
A minimum of 7 to 10 years successful experience fund accounting and finance, with a preference in Community Foundation experience. Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience preferred. Other qualifications include:

Performance Standards
The Vice President for Finance and Administration will be evaluated by her/his ability to effectively perform the essential functions of the position and the ability to meet annual individual and departmental goals set in consultation with the President/Chief Executive Officer.
