Boston Symphony Orchestra

Organization Image

As one of the foremost arts organizations in the country, the Boston Symphony Orchestra knows that it is our responsibility to help shape the future of our young people. An important component of the Boston Symphony's mission is to encourage music education and strengthen ties with our surrounding communities. We are particularly proud of our Community Partnerships with the public schools and community leaders of Chelsea, Peabody, Lawrence, Lynn, and Worcester. These programs address the need for high-quality arts exposure and music education in the public schools. Two additional benefits of our Community Partnerships are that they introduce the magic of the Boston Symphony concert experience to the people of those communities and provide the opportunity for families to spend quality time together.

Our longest-running community collaboration, the Roxbury Community Program, is implemented through more than 80 community, cultural, social, and religious organizations in Roxbury, Dorchester, Mattapan, and Jamaica Plain. Through shared learning and listening experiences, the program works to strengthen families and reinforce music education for children.

Community Outreach: Concerts and Partnerships
Boston Symphony Orchestra Education and Community Programs reach hundreds of thousands of children and adults throughout New England each year. Programs include Community Partnerships, Community Concerts, the annual Salute to Symphony Open House, Youth and Family Concerts, and Project STEP (String Training and Educational Programs for Students of Color). Education at the BSO
Education is a very important piece of the Boston Symphony Orchestra's mission. We have dedicated ourselves to spreading joy and educating children about music since 1959, when Harry Ellis Dickson established the BSO's Youth Concerts. More

Youth and Family Concerts
Getting kids excited about the world of classical music is what BSO Youth concerts are all about. Youth and Family concerts introduce the wonders of great music into the lives of elementary, middle school, and high school students. Thousands of young people have already experienced the thrill of a visit to Symphony Hall and a performance by the BSO. More

Education Outreach
More than 60,000 students throughout New England benefit from Boston Symphony Orchestra education programs. The students come from a wide range of ethnic, economic and racial groups. More

Resources for Teachers
The BSO Education Staff has put together Lesson Plans and Resource Kits for K-12 teachers. There is also a list of composers and their compositions to enhance music education. More

BSO Resource Center
The newest and most exciting venture for the Boston Symphony is our Education Resource Center for teachers. The BSO has developed a series of highly regarded programs that supplement and reinforce music education initiatives in the public schools of metropolitan Boston and beyond, addressing a need for high quality arts exposure and music education in the public schools. More

Professional Development

Boston Pops, Holiday Pops

Today, more than ever, the Boston Pops provides music lovers in Boston and throughout the country the chance to hear good music in all its varied flavors. The orchestra offers nearly 100 concerts in Symphony Hall each year, including a 10-week spring season from May to mid-July, and a month of holiday concerts before and after Christmas. Additionally, the Emmy Award-winning "Evening at Pops", now in its 33rd year, airs nationally on PBS throughout the summer, and the annual "Pop Goes the Fourth!" special is seen on A&E. With its concerts at home and on tour, and its presence in millions of homes through Evening at Pops and its many recordings, the Boston Pops is truly America's orchestra.

Take part in one of Boston's most beloved traditions - a Holiday Pops concert at historic Symphony Hall. Bring your family and friends for a matinee or evening concert and enjoy the glorious New England holiday season.
