UNLV is a dynamic university that is on the move, with even greater prospects for the future. We continue to set new milestones each year in terms of faculty, programs, facilities, and national recognition. UNLV's research designation by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has been classified as Doctoral/Research Intensive, and UNLV was recently ranked within the National Doctoral Universities category of the U.S. News & World Report annual America's Best Colleges guidebook. Last year our new state-of-the-art Lied Library opened, which features an Information Commons that gives our students, faculty, and community members access to a two-million volume collection, comprehensive databases, Internet workstations, and other state-of-the-art technology. Located in Southern Nevada, the fastest-growing area of the country, UNLV is transforming itself into a new kind of urban university, one that aspires to be a premier research university while also assuring that it simultaneously remains focused on student learning and personal development. We now have a student body of over 24,500 students, including more than 3,840 millennium scholars, a faculty and staff of 2,400 with credentials from the most prestigious institutions worldwide, and a choice of nearly 200 bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degree programs.
New academic programs are continually being added to meet the latest career needs of our students, especially in professional areas. UNLV is the only university in Nevada with a School of Law, a School of Architecture, a College of Hotel Administration, and a Physical Therapy program, to name but a few of the programs we have to offer. And now a dental school is on the horizon as well. Other unique programs include a bachelor's degree in Senior Adult Theatre, an award-winning Jazz Studies program, a bachelor's degree in early childhood education, and a creative writing program with an international focus - led by Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka and other prize-winning, nationally recognized authors. Amidst all the exciting changes, however, one thing remains the same. Our professors are excellent scholars who bring the latest knowledge in their field into the classroom. They actively involve students in their research and creative activity. And, most important, they are excellent teachers who will challenge students and prepare them for a career in whatever field they choose. We have much to offer. Whether you are looking for employment, exploring as a potential student, or merely interested in learning more about our programs and faculty, I urge you to explore UNLV.
