Help With Searching on Philanthropy Careers
You may search using a single word (example: donor) or a combination of words (example: grant making).
Optionally, you may search by zip code (example: 20037), or combine search words with zip code to find nearby job listings (example: fund raising and 20037).
Jobs matching your search may be re-sorted many different ways, including relevance, date posted, and by the name of the hiring organization. It's possible to form complex searches, such as those spanning multiple job categories or states, easily from our advanced search page.
Once you've found the right search you may save it and receive e-mail notifications whenever new jobs are posted matching your criteria. You can learn more about custom search agents here.
Refining your search
- Use quotation marks if you want to find items in which your search terms appear next to each other and in a specific order.
For example, a search for:
"fund raising"
will only retrieve documents that contain the exact phrase.
Tip: special characters -- asterisks, tildes, or plus or minus signs -- will work within the quotation marks.
- Use the plus (+) sign if a term or phrase MUST appear in the search results. For example, a search for:
+california "fund raising"
means that all results MUST contain the word "california," and may also include
the phrase fund raising.
- Use the minus (-) sign to indicate that a term or phrase must NOT appear in the search results. For example, a search for:
california "fund raising" -marketing
will retrieve documents that contain either california or fund raising, but none that contain the word marketing.
Tip: Use the minus function carefully; you may inadvertently leave out relevant results.
- For the narrowest search, select the match every word option. This restricts the results lists to documents that contain every term entered in the search box. For example a search for:
california "fund raising" "los angeles"
will retrieve only documents that contain the words california, fund raising, AND los angeles.
- Use the asterisk (*) as a wild-card character to broaden your search results. For example:
fund*
will retrieve documents with the words fund, funds, funder, funding and even fundraising in them.
- Use the tilde (~) to include synonyms and other related concepts of a term. The tilde should be inserted in front of the word or phrase you wish to expand. For example:
~fund
will not only retrieve documents with fund in them but also endowment, gift, finance, and bank.
