November 12, 2007 Wealthy Foundations and Charities Urged to Spend More MoneyNew pressure is mounting on wealthy charitable institutions to spend more each year, and to make sure a broad range of people benefit from philanthropic donations, reports The New York Times in the cover article of its annual “Giving” section. Another article, My Network, My Cause, reports on the rapid growth of social-networking Web sites as a means of raising money and awareness. For example, Facebook — a popular online network — has created a section called “Causes on Facebook” that allows people to solicit and make donations to support charities or activist activities. “Just as people rush to the Web to get news about crises, they rush to the Web to help out,” says Susan P. Crawford, a visiting professor at the University of Michigan Law School and an expert on Internet law and technology. Other articles in the Times’s special section report on mental-health programs for veterans, animal-rescue efforts, the $10-million X Prize and other big-money innovation prizes, the culture of philanthropy in Silicon Valley, and other topics.
