European Philanthropist Shares Advice on Giving

One of Europe’s most-generous philanthropists has shared his top five rules that guide his giving, reports Wealth-Bulletin.

Tom Hunter, the richest man in Scotland, who made his fortune by founding a retail-clothing chain, has pledged about $2-billion to education and humanitarian causes. His philosophy of giving:

  • Regard philanthropy as a business and be organized in donating money.
  • Have good relationships with experienced people.
  • Persuade others to support your causes.
  • Keep track of charitable projects through performance measures.
  • Learn from failure.

For more on Mr. Hunter, read The Chronicle’s profile on the billionaire.

  1. Ilearned his approach when raising funds for the Friends of the NWRL snd the Phi;ade;phia chapter of MSU alumnus. Most fundraisers in thye 90s thought i was looney tunes. It feels good to be confirmed by a man with money.

  2. I read this article in full – it’s fascinating and good advice for business people. I created a company in memory of my 28 year old sister, Liz, who died from breast cancer. Uptown Liz (www.uptownliz.com) promotes products from companies whose proceeds go to charity. You can shop on this one-of-a-kind website by charitable cause or product category, knowing that every time you make a purchase you are giving back.
