Charity and Drug Company to Start Major Medical Trials

PATH Malaria Vaccine Initiative, a charity supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, in Seattle, is collaborating with the British drug maker GlaxoSmithKline PLC as well as clinics and research centers in Africa to develop a malaria vaccine, BusinessWeek reports.

Researchers seeking to create the world’s first malaria vaccine plan to start a medical trial next month involving 16,000 children, which could be the largest such trial ever conducted on children in Africa.

Comments

  1. This is all very well and we all hope for a successful conclusion. However, it is likely to take some time and every moment the children continue to die. Surely it has to be acknowledged that the root causes of malaria (and other killers) are the unsanitary conditions in which the children live with their families, in particular where there is stagnant water and a lack of drainage. Why can’t collaboration with local authorities be initiated to improve those conditions and to hold seminars on awareness raising for those people living in such environments? That would have immediate positive and long-lasting results.
