Catholic Groups Reach Abuse Settlement

Thirteen men who said they were abused as students attending Briscoe Memorial School in Kent, Wash., have reached a $7-million settlement with the Seattle Roman Catholic Archdiocese, which owned the school, and the Congregation of Christian Brothers, the religious order that ran it, reports The Seattle Times.

  1. When I think about this sex scandal I can’t help but think about Lorraina Bobbit. Young boys get raped & abused and there are trials and lots of money getting thrown about. Little girls get raped & abused all the time and yet there is hardly anyone held accountable and they rarely get support. No one ever suggested the boys wanted it unlike the response girls get. Then add the staggering media attention.

Does anyone get really mad about the fact there is a whole lot of attention & money going to boys that were abused and practically nothing is mentioned about little girls?

Are we supposed to believe that all this money is really because of the churches systematic shuffling around of priests & the lies to protect the perpetrators and not the sexual assault survivors?
Is the guilt money more because the abuse is to little boys by men in trusted positions of power than a betrayal of the church to protect the innocent? Frankly, I’m not sure and that cynical side is playing havoc with my faith in our society.

Sure Ms. Bobbitt loped off her husband’s penis and there was lots of media attention and yet no attention to daily abuse and mutilation of little girls by their abusers. Is it so common it is no longer news?

I’m not saying or suggesting the suffering is less for the boys than girls. I’m just reacting to fact that the media is way more concerned about a boy being sexual abused than a girl and he is way more likely to be believed and compensated for his abuse than a girl is by our society.

Just a thought on Friday afternoon.
