The Laura and John Arnold Foundation announced a $25-million donation Wednesday expand successful charter schools to New Orleans and draw more national education groups to the city, reports the Times-Picayune.
The five-year grant will be disbursed New Schools for New Orleans and the Charter School Growth Fund and is aimed at improving educational opportunities for 15,000 kids. It follows the Houston-based Arnold Foundation's $15-million gift in September to 10 schools and education-reform organizations in New Orleans.
"It's very, very rare for the foundation to give out this large of a sum of money," said Caprice Young, the foundation's vice president for education, of the latest grant. "What's happening in New Orleans is working."
