Sister Nirmala Joshi, the Indian nun who followed Mother Teresa as head of the Missionaries of Charity caring for country’s poor, died Tuesday at the age of 81, reports The New York Times.
The Kolkata-based organization said Sister Nirmala, who suffered from incurable malaria, had been in declining health in recent days, but it did not give more details about her death.
Sister Nirmala served for 12 years as the Roman Catholic charity’s superior general after the death in 1997 of Mother Teresa, the group’s founder and winner of the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize. Born to Hindu parents in the northern Indian city of Ranchi, she reportedly converted after being educated by Christian missionaries and learning of Mother Teresa’s work.
