The San Diego Opera, which nearly closed last year before regrouping behind a new board and a $2 million crowdfunding campaign, has hired David Bennett from New York’s Gotham Chamber Opera as its new general director, reports U-T San Diego. The appointment, announced Wednesday, comes as the San Diego company pursues, a lower-cost, more community-oriented course.
Mr. Bennett succeeds Ian Campbell, who built San Diego Opera’s name producing mainstream grand opera but left last spring after a revamped board rejected his proposal to shutter the company, which he said was no longer financially viable. At Gotham Mr. Bennett gained a reputation for presenting lesser-known works in nontraditional venues. He will officially join the San Diego group on June 15 with a salary of $200,000, less than half of Mr. Campbell’s base pay in 2012-13.
