The Smithsonian has launched its first crowdfunding campaign, seeking to raise $500,000 on Kickstarter to preserve and once again exhibit the space suit Neil Armstrong wore while taking humankind’s first steps on the moon, reports CollectSpace, an online news service on space history.
Kicked off Monday, the 46th anniversary of the inaugural moon landing, the four-week “Reboot the Suit"campaign seeks pledges for research on conserving the space suit, documenting it with a 3D digital scan, and returning it to public view at the National Air and Space Museum by the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 mission in 2019. The suit, which Cathleen Lewis, a curator at the museum, called “the crown jewel of our collection,” has been in storage for preservation purposes since 2006.
